About the Inn

The picturesque Inn overlooks, the cascading turbulence of the Kanawha Falls where the contrasting Appalachian Mountains rise calmly, cradling The Glen Ferris Inn within its valley. The setting is a true contrast of tranquility and turbulence, of past and present. The Inn's carefully tended gardens attract visitors throughout all seasons with its landscaping and a nearly year-round profusion of blooms.

In 1839, Stockton's Inn opened its doors to visiting stagecoaches, allowing weary passengers to rest in comfort alongside the scenic kanawha Falls. The Inn was owned by Colonel Aaron Stockton, a sawmill operator and coal entrepreneur.

The Inn was fired upon in 1861 and 1862 as the Confederate Army fought for control of the region. The Inn withstood assault and continued to serve as house and home to soldiers on both sides during the War Between the States.

One of Stockton's grandchildren helped to bring an end to stagecoach travel to the Inn. Oscar Veazey completed surveying the New River Gorge for the C & O Railroad in 1869, and the resulting railroad diminished the stagecoach travel the Inn had previously supported.

The increasing use of steel and aluminum resulted in the construction of the nearby Wilson Aluminum Plant. This later became a part of the Union Carbide Corporartion, who purchased the Inn from Margaret Hawkins for $100.00. Union Carbide added the current wing housing ten rooms in 1929, and the Aaron Stockton Inn became The Glen Ferris Inn.

Elkam Corporation purchased Union carbide's ferroalloy facilities in the United States and the Inn began to host increasing numbers of international guests.

In 1996, the renovated and historic Glen Ferris Inn was purchased by a Glen Ferris family who are dedicated to increasing the comfort and convenience for guests while preserving the historic character of the wonderful Inn.

Couples discover both charm and elegance at the Glen Ferris Inn's wedding receptions. Formal teas and dinner parties are popular as well. A fascination for things from the past combine with an appreciation for today's conveniences, keep guests pleased, content, and returning to our Inn. The Inn offers each guest an opportunity to discover a simpler, more elegant style of leisure.
